I was dozing in an armchair in the private room of General Premium Hospital when I heard my mom screaming at someone in the corridor.
“How could this happen?”
“It was a sad accident.”
“Sad? I will show you sad…” I noticed a hysterical pitch in her voice. I was expecting some nurse to put her in her place, but the voice I heard made me shiver.
“Calm down, lady.”
“Calm down? I´ll calm down if you tell me exactly what happened to my daughter…”
“I don´t know...”
“You don´t know? What irresponsible piece of...”
“Mooom.” I interrupted her just in time. She was about to swear in the face of my boss.
“Oh darling, you are awake... What a relief.”
“Your screams must have awakened her.” Mr. Boss (yes, it´s his name, Arthur Boss) gave his opinion and her attention was back to him.
“I will sue you.”
“I can suggest a great lawyer.”
“Ah, we have a cynical type here.”
“I have nothing to fear. I just arrived here.”
“And where were you?”
“Do you want a report?” Mr. Boss was taking things lightly. My mom seemed to awake his sense of humor.
“I will slap this man... Mandy, why didn´t you tell me that you worked for a charlatan?"
“Now wait a minute. It´s not my fault. It was after her work hours and she had left the building much earlier. Then she fell on the sidewalk and our doorman recognized her and assisted her.”
“It´s true, mom, I had left work an hour before and stopped to eat a sandwich across the street. I slipped and hit my head with the fall. It gave me a lump, but that´s all.”
“I demand all the exams. Boss here can pay for it.” My mom didn´t seem to grasp that my accident was not his fault or his responsibility. When the doorman called him, he insisted that I came to this nice hospital at his expense. Since she was not an ungrateful person, I noticed that she was in a state of shock. She has always been extra protective of me.
“I insist on it.” Mr. Boss was charming now.
“Do you want to piss me off?
“I´m agreeing with you...”
“You are a cold self-centered being.”
“At your service, madam…”
It´s not that he was being cold. What my mom didn´t understand is that this man was used to solving problems, fixing things, having people do as he told them. He always had things done his way because his money and power guaranteed it… And moreover, my case was not serious at all. I was in no bigger danger than a boy who falls from his bike.
Mr. Boss was interrupted by doctor Smiles, who came to check on me.
When my mom saw the doctor she immediately started to cry.
Her previous rudeness was like a defense system for her. But seeing the doctor and realizing, once again, that I was in the hospital was just too much for her. It broke her defenses and she clanged to the doctor, crying.
He spoke firmly that my condition was not serious and smoothly he transferred this sobbing woman to the arms of Mr. Boss.
She accepted the explanations from the doctor and the nest of such strong arms that embraced her, slowly calming down.
Mr. Boss became very silent and thoughtful.
CEO POV
Mandy is a great intern, organized and creative. She was recommended by my friend, Prof. Jackson, who has the talent to discover geniuses in math.
But this girl is also polite and sweet and I was worried when I heard about her accident in front of my building. I had her sent to the best and most expensive hospital in the city. Like I do only for family members.
Boy was I surprised to be verbally attacked by her furious and lunatic mother. I mean, she was out of control. She yelled at me from the reception area to the corridor in front of Mandy´s room.
The woman seemed to blame me for the situation.
Her beautiful voice was high and mad at me.
Her green eyes sent fires in my direction. If she wasn´t so pretty I would put her in her place.
But since the woman looks like a top model, I decided to see the humor of the situation.
Until we were suddenly hugging and she was crying so hard. It moved me deeply and I decided that I was going to protect her and be there for her, in whatever she needed. It was so intense that I knew that I could not let her go out of my life.
MOM POV
My girl. My only child! Since her father died in a plane crash she is all I have.
And to hear so abruptly that she was in the hospital, with injuries in her head. Somebody had to be held responsible for this matter. It was just natural for me to blame her CEO boss as soon as I saw him, so calm and arrogant in the hospital entrance. It took all my self-control not to punch him right there and then.
Oh, what a relief to listen to her doctor´s explanations. She´ll be fine, after all.
But this Mr. Boss, the man gives on my nerves. I just don´t want to ever see him again.
