I waited a moment. When I saw Catalina's head tilt back, I led her back to the car and helped her in, putting a firm arm around her waist as she leaned all her weight against me. She was a mess. One second she was giggling, and the next she was sobbing. Her steps were unsteady on the pavement.
The cool night air did little to sober her up. I managed to get her into the passenger seat and buckled her seatbelt as she mumbled incoherently. Her head bounced against the window as I closed the door.
