She said it so calmly that, for a moment, I thought I'd misunderstood her.

"What?" I asked, straightening. "What do you mean by 'taking a break,' Stella?"

She looked away, taking a deep breath before meeting my eyes again.

"Elaine thinks… maybe it would be better if we waited until the divorce is finalized. To avoid problems with Sophie, with Daniel's custody, with the media…" Her voice wavered slightly. "Maybe it really is the most sensible thing to do."
