Santiago jerked the steering wheel, dodging the last burst of gunfire that exploded against the asphalt a few feet from the car. Aylin was in the back seat, crouched down, covering her head with her arms as the roar of gunfire echoed like a desperate drum behind them.
“Hold on!” he shouted, accelerating until the engine roared furiously.
He dialed a number on the hands-free system, without taking his eyes off the road. On the other end, his wife answered in a dry voice, without any greetings.
“Yes?”
“Get the kids ready. I'm coming to pick you up. Now.”
“What happened?”
“Shooting. At Aylin's house. We're leaving town.”
“I'm on it,” she replied, hanging up immediately.
