Chapter 1 – Betrayed in her own bed
I got home after a long day and my parents were waiting for me in the living room.
- Catarina, sit down because we need to talk. – My father said and seemed very nervous.
- Can you tell me, Dad, what happened? – I asked my father tiredly, I had worked all day, gone to college at night and, when I got home, the only thing I wanted was to take a shower and fall into bed. But that wasn't possible.
- Catarina, your cousin's wedding invitation arrived. – My mother said.
- That little woman is not my cousin! – I said, already getting nervous.
- Catarina, she is your cousin. – My mother said. – You better stop with this childish attack. Melissa already hit her and made a scene here at home. Now that's enough! She's my sister's daughter, so she's your cousin.
- I'm sorry, Mom, but she's nothing to me. – I tried to stay calm. – She slept with my boyfriend in my bed, that’s not something you do.
I had been dating Cláudio for four years, he was my first boyfriend, and I found him in my bed, in my room, having sex with Kelly, my cousin! I was shocked. Of course Melissa, my best friend, went after them. Since then, things have been tense in my house, because my parents insisted that it was nonsense and that I should act as if nothing had happened and go back to living with my cousin.
- He was wrong, Catarina, he was your boyfriend. – My mother argued. – Poor Kelly, she was seduced, he dishonored her, now he’s going to marry her so she won’t be talked about badly in town.
- Oh, mom! Spare me and spare yourself! The whole town knows that Kelly is a slut... – I lost my patience.
- Catarina, watch your vocabulary! – My father called my attention. – Look, if you don't want to be around Kelly, that's fine, but you're going to this wedding. And enough of this rude behavior.
- What do I mean? – I thought I had heard wrong.
- You're going to your cousin Catarina's wedding. That's an order! We're your parents and you're going to obey. – My mother spoke angrily to me, as if I were the one in the wrong in this situation.
- I'm sorry, mom, but I'm not going! I follow your rules, I'm a good daughter, but this time it won't work. I was the one who was offended! I have every right not to want to be the family's joke anymore. – I said, already crying.
- ENOUGH, CATARINA! – My father shouted and scared me. – You're going to this wedding and that's the end of it.
- But, dad...
- I don't care, Catarina! It's important for your mother to keep peace in the family. So you're going and that's it. – My father said, not leaving room for questions.
I went to my room and spent the night crying. The next day I told Melissa everything, and she wasted no time in getting the invitations for a masquerade ball, a gala event, telling my parents that it would be extremely important for my career, since the most important businessmen in the city would be there, I would make very important contacts and our teachers had promised to introduce us to several businessmen who would open doors for our professional future.
At first my parents weren't very convinced, but Melissa's parents talked to them and convinced them that it would be an excellent opportunity for my future. So they agreed that I should take advantage of the opportunity.
- Catarina, you can't say no to me! I've already bought the invitations, the masks and I've even convinced your parents that it's an extremely important event for your professional future, which gave me a lot of work. This party is going to be incredible and you won't miss it! - Melissa said and looked at me with the eyes of an abandoned puppy, clasping her hands together as if pleading.
I was sitting at my desk at work, in the middle of the afternoon on a Thursday, between taking messages and making calls, and Mel showed up with coffee, chocolate cakes and this insistence that I accept to go to the masked ball that took place annually and was the biggest event in our city.
- Oh, Mel, how can I not say no to you? Okay, I'll go!
I agreed to go to the ball, but I still wasn't sure. Anyway, I was going to sleep at Mel's house to avoid the wedding, but I wouldn't go to the party. However, Melissa did everything she could to convince me to go to the party. On Saturday we got ready at her house.
- What's up, huh, my friend! You look so hot! - She handed me a beautiful golden mask, all worked like lace, that covered up to my nose and I put it on. I was wearing a bright red satin dress and the mask matched perfectly. - So, are we ready?
- Yes, we are ready. - I answered and grabbed my bag. – Oh, I forgot my perfume.
- No, it's okay, you'll use my mom's new perfume. She doesn't mind.
- When Fernando, Mel's boyfriend, saw us, he smiled, gave Mel a kiss and said:
- Girls, you look gorgeous! I think you'll leave this party with a new boyfriend, Cat.
- No boyfriend, Nando. Actually, I think I'd better stay, I'm not in the mood to party. Please, Mel, let me stay?
“Flávio”My sister called me to tell me she was going to work as Patrício's assistant, which I thought was great because I knew Patrício would be kind to her. She also said she would take Manu to college because she was at the office. The two were getting along very well, and that made me happy, after all, Lisa needed a friend, and so did Manu, since things in the group were different now.Catarina was busy with her five children who were already running around everywhere, and Sam was also very busy with the baby. Taís left, and Virgínia never had time, so the girls hardly ever saw each other. Only Melissa always stopped by the apartment to see Manu, but she was on vacation and traveled with Nando.During this time, Rick got very close to Manu, as he was missing his wife who had left a long time ago, but nobody knew how things were going between them, although I suspected Manu knew. The phone ringing pulled me from my thoughts about the group. It was Camilo, Manu's brother; he was sup
“Lisandra”It had been three days since I sent my resume to Rick and I hadn't received any response. Maybe it was time to go to an employment agency and see if I could find something. Manu is very sweet; she let me use her car since Flávio is driving her everywhere because of her mess with her mother, so it would be much easier for me to get around.I printed some resumes, researched some employment agencies online, got ready, and went for it, as they say. I had a plan, and I was going to carry it out. I would get a job, have my own apartment, and my parents would never force me to do anything I didn't want to do again. It can't be that hard. But I was wrong. At the first employment agency I went to, I had an interview, one of those psychology tests—a boring thing, actually—and at the end they said they would contact me if something came up that matched my profile, but that it would be difficult. This obsession that human resources people have with treating us like we're defining a pr
“Rita”The day was so hot, and I arrived home from church exhausted, needing a shower and some refreshment. It was tiring playing the abandoned wife and having to accept all the advice and lamentations about my ungrateful husband who left home. Actually, when I arrived and realized that Orlando had left home, I was quite happy; I was already tired of him, but I needed to maintain my role as the loving, abandoned wife.- Cida! Cida! – I called the maid, but she was a slowpoke, always taking forever to show up.- Yes, ma'am? – Cida appeared, wiping her hands on her apron.- Where is Juliano?- Sleeping, ma'am.- Bring me some refreshment, I'm very hot. – The maid left the room and returned with the tray of refreshment. She was looking at me suspiciously. – What is it, Cida?- Boss, Mr. Camilo was here earlier.- What did that wretch come to do in my house? You let him in, you worthless woman? – I had already forbidden that unbearable man from entering my house, and even after Manuela le
“Camilo”After my visit to my sister, I kept thinking about how to get Rita's sample for the DNA test. Flávio had explained the ways to get it, from a strand of hair or a glass she used. So I kept thinking about how to get it.I came to the conclusion that the best thing would be to go to the lion's den. I woke up early and went to Rita's house, at the time I knew she would be at church. I never understood why she lived at church, if she was such a bad person. Maybe she just wanted to maintain the pose of a good person for the rest of the city.- Mr. Camilo, good morning. – The maid greeted me and was surprised by my presence. After I left this house, the few times I came were because of Manu, who was no longer here, thankfully.- Hi, Cida, is your boss here? I want to talk to her.- She went to church. And the boy Juliano is sleeping.- Of course he is, that useless boy. "I'll wait for Rita, I need to talk to her." I said, going inside and sitting down in the living room."She'll be
“Manuela”I left college with PH by my side; he didn't leave me alone for a single moment. When we got outside, Flávio was already waiting for me outside the car.- Hi, Shorty! I missed you. – He pulled me into a hug. – Good evening, Paulo Henrique.- Good evening, detective. – PH replied somewhat awkwardly.- Dude, call me Flávio. I'm sorry about that day, but I think you can understand me. – Flávio was apologizing to my friend for the rude way he treated him when they met, and I thought that was sweet.- Don't worry, Flávio, I understand. And you're right to be jealous, Manu is really beautiful and very special. – PH smiled at me. – Manu, I'll wait for you here at the door tomorrow. – We said goodbye to my friend and got into the car.- Shorty, what happened? – Flávio asked as soon as he started the car.- Mr. Cândido showed up here. – I said, still processing that visit.- Who? – Flávio was confused.- Mr. Cândido, the father of the fiancé my mother arranged for me. – I explained.
“Manuela”But look at the news, Flávio appeared in front of me with a woman hanging on to him, but instead of introducing her and explaining that she was his sister, he just looked at me with that mocking little smile. I was ready to kick the girl out, but luckily she got ahead of me and introduced herself.Lisandra was beautiful, tall, thin, with a slim waist, long, straight black hair, and dark eyes like Flávio's. She had doll-like eyelashes, which enhanced her face. She had full lips and fair skin. But she was also very friendly and only lost her smile when Flávio mentioned Patrício, which made me think that the two probably didn't get along very well.- And where are the powerful ones, Rick? – Flávio asked, referring to Patrício and Alessandro.- Patrício already left, he arrived here very early today and left in a hurry even earlier. But Alessandro... – Rick looked ahead and saw Alessandro leaving through the door.- I'm here! How are you, Flávio? Catarina's been complaining that
