Peter frowned, his voice heavy with self-pity.
“I regretted marrying her…” he said, as though that alone should absolve him of everything. “Let’s have our life back. Leave that man,” he insisted, his voice low. “I’ll raise your son as if he were my own.”
The words hung in the air, sickening in their absurdity.
He actually believed them.
He believed he still had some kind of right to her. That he still had a choice. That somehow, he was still an option.
