The envelope was on the desk. Roman opened it without hesitation. He read every word calmly. When he finished, he put the papers aside and dialed a number on his personal phone.

“I need you to come to the house today, in person.”

The lawyer asked no questions.

An hour later, the man entered the office with a briefcase in his hand and a frown on his face.

“What happened?”

Roman handed him the subpoena without saying a word.

The lawyer read it carefully. His eyes hardened as he turned to the second page.

“It's formalized. Miranda's lawsuit is straightforward and well-founded. It's not going to be easy.”

“What exactly does that mean?”

“First, the preliminary hearing. They want to prove that Miranda was never dead and that you knew it from the beginning. If they can prove it, your status as a widower will be automatically revoked and you will be returned to married status.”

Roman leaned against the desk.

“And with that, your marriage to Aylin is annulled.”
