“Baby, calm down. Don’t you think all of this is actually a great idea?”

I’ve lost count of how many times Paula has said the same thing since she heard me yelling over the phone earlier.

“Fine,” I snapped. “Then tell me what’s so great about it. Your attitude is pissing me off, Paula. I’ve told you everything that happened for the past hour, and you keep repeating the same question. If you’ve got such a brilliant idea, then say it!”

“Hey, hey, you’ve been so cranky lately, Young Master Fredric,” she teased. “You even scolded me. But I’ll forgive you this time. Honestly, it’s not something I can say over the phone. Could you come see me later?”

The clock on the wall read seven p.m. It was still too early to leave the house when the atmosphere was this tense.

“I’ll come to your attic at eleven. Grandma’s not asleep yet,” I said.

“Alright, darling. Take your time. Now, just calm yourself down first. I’ll be soaking in the bathtub until then.”
