Chapter 3 The Price of Blood
Peter's phone vibrated, breaking the silence of the bedroom. Exhausted from the intense night he had spent with his mistress, he answered without much enthusiasm.

"Good morning, sir… did I satisfy your addiction?"

The voice on the other end came sharp and cold.

"Good morning? You made me waste time and money, Peter. Your girlfriend was not in my bed like we agreed. I ended up falling asleep waiting."

Peter froze.

"What do you mean…?"

"Enough. There is no promotion anymore."

The call ended without giving him a chance to reply.

Peter stood there, stunned, until anger exploded inside him. He hurled his phone against the wall.

"Damn her…" he growled, his eyes burning with rage. "Damn her, you ruined everything!"

-

Fifteen days later…

Time seemed to crawl. Olivia wandered through her days restless, carrying a hollow feeling in her chest she couldn't explain. The messages she sent Peter went unanswered. Her calls went straight to voicemail.

During the first week, she tried to justify it. 'He must be busy. Work, stress…' By the second week, the silence began to hurt. The love she believed was solid seemed to crumble a little more every day.

Desperate for news, she finally called her future mother-in-law.

That left her shaken.

"He went to deal with issues at another branch, dear. He'll be in another state for a few days," the woman said indifferently. "Didn't he tell you?"

Olivia felt her heart drop. Her throat tightened, but she hid the pain.

"Oh… yes. Of course. He mentioned it briefly," she lied, forcing a natural tone. "I just forgot."

But when she hung up, tears slid down her face in silence.

That day, she locked herself in her office at the company, trying to focus on reports. The soft sound of rain against the window echoed her mood.

Then the door suddenly opened.

Victor rushed in, his face pale, his eyes desperate.

"Liv, we need to talk," he said, his voice shaking.

Olivia stood up immediately.

"What is it this time, Victor? What did you screw up now?"

He closed the door behind him and leaned on her desk, as if the ground might collapse beneath him.

"I… I messed up, Liv," he blurted out. "I got into some serious gambling… lost a big bet… I used the company as collateral and… and I lost."

Olivia's eyes widened.

"What?" Her voice echoed in the room. "Have you lost your mind, Victor? The company is everything we have!"

"I was sure I'd win, but it went wrong," he said, running his hands through his hair, sweating. "To get the documents back, I borrowed money from loan sharks. Now they're threatening me… threatening us."

Olivia covered her mouth, stunned.

"You're completely irresponsible, Victor," she said shakily.

He continued, his voice breaking.

"They said if I don't pay soon, they'll come after the family. You're in danger, Liv. Dad… Mom… everyone."

"Dad…" Her heart clenched. "You know what could happen if he finds out. His heart can't take another shock like this!"

Victor nodded, tears in his eyes.

"I know. That's what scares me the most. He can't find out."

Olivia finally blew up..

"When are you going to grow up, Victor?" she shouted, her voice trembling. "You're the oldest! I'm so tired of fixing your messes, covering for you, cleaning up after you! It's always me who has to solve everything!"

He lowered his head, ashamed.

"I… I know. I messed up…"

"Messed up?" She slammed her hand on the desk. "That's not even close!" She stepped closer, staring him down. "How much is this damn debt?"

Victor hesitated, his voice dropping, as if he were afraid to say the number out loud.

"With the interest… five hundred thousand dollars."

The world seemed to spin around her. Olivia took a step back, stunned.

"Half a million?" Her disbelief edged into panic. "This time, I'm going to kill you, Victor!"

Without thinking, her palm cracked against his face.

"You've gone way too far with this addiction! How are we supposed to get that kind of money?" Tears streamed down her cheeks. "We don't have that much in cash. Any big transaction, Dad will notice. And you know what that means!"

Victor stared at her with watery eyes, the red mark on his face burning more from shame than pain.

"I didn't think… I was sure… I was going to win…"

"That's the problem!" she shouted. "You never think! You just act, and I'm the one who pays for it—all of us pay for it!"

For a moment, a heavy silence fell between them. Olivia breathed hard, her mind racing. Despite the anger, despite the shock, one truth burned inside her: she loved her brother. More than anything.

She closed her eyes, fighting back tears.

"I'll fix this," she murmured, almost to herself.

"How?" Victor looked up, his voice trembling. "There's no way out, Liv."

That was when a memory cut through her mind like icy wind.

The card.

The card left on the nightstand. The gesture she had taken as proof of Peter's love.

Her heart began to race.

"I know what to do," she said firmly. "Peter will have to forgive me."

Victor stared at her, confused.

"What?"

"This is the last time I help you. Do you understand?" Her voice was cold, resolute. "You're going to promise me something, Victor. You're going to swear you'll never gamble again. That you'll get help."

He nodded frantically.

"I swear, Liv. I swear on Mom."

Olivia took a deep breath and looked him straight in the eye.

"Tonight, you're taking me to that loan shark."

-

The night felt heavy when they arrived at the address. It was an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of town, where the smell of rust and gasoline mixed with the distant roar of motorcycles. Two massive men covered in tattoos guarded the entrance, their stares full of menace.

Olivia squeezed her brother's hand and walked in. Her heart pounded against her ribs, but she kept her head high.

Inside, sitting behind a table, was the loan shark's boss. A man with cold eyes and a lit cigarette between his fingers, watching them with a predator's calm.

"So…" he said slowly, exhaling smoke. "The little gambler brought his sister to clean up his mess."

Victor trembled, but Olivia stepped forward.

"I'm here to pay the debt."

A crooked smile spread across the man's lips.

"Half a million isn't pocket change, sweetheart. You sure you can cover that?"

Olivia opened her purse, took out the black card, and placed it on the table.

"Run it."

The loan shark raised his eyebrows in surprise. He pulled out the card machine and inserted the card. When the transaction went through, he chuckled.

"Impressive. Such a pretty girl… and so generous," he said, leaning forward as he handed it back. "Your brother's lucky to have you."

Olivia didn't answer. She grabbed the card, took hold of Victor's arm, and pulled him outside, her heart racing.

The cold night wind wrapped around her, but it didn't calm her soul.

She believed she had done the right thing.

She had saved her brother, protected her family, and prevented a tragedy.

What she didn't know was that by using that card, she had opened the door to consequences that would change her destiny forever.
