Chapter 3 Rules, Coffee, and Silence
The Montgomery Group reception area was a reflection of its owner: immaculate, cold, and intimidating. The marble floor mirrored the sterile lights overhead, while the glass walls revealed the restless movement of the city outside. Eloise arrived at 7:45 a.m. Her heels clicked firmly across the lobby, but her heart, that was another story.

She took a deep breath as she stepped into the elevator. Her outfit was elegant but understated. A black pencil skirt, a white silk blouse, her hair pulled into a modern bun. She wasn't the type to flatter people, but she knew how to command a room.

When she reached the twenty-first floor, she was greeted by a thin woman with rectangular glasses and a sour expression.

"Miss Beaumont, correct?" the woman said, looking her up and down. "I'm Melissa, the HR director and… your direct supervisor. Before you step into Mr. Montgomery's office, there are a few rules you need to understand."

Eloise simply nodded.

Melissa continued.

"Avoid personal conversations. He hates lateness. He prefers silence during drives. Don't ask questions unless absolutely necessary. And coffee…" she leaned closer, as if sharing a secret, "…only black. No sugar. No mistakes."

"Understood," Eloise replied with a faint smile. "I happen to like demanding men."

Melissa raised an eyebrow, unimpressed.

"Good luck. You'll need it."

The door opened automatically, revealing the office. August Montgomery stood with his back turned, staring out at the city. His posture was rigid, hands tucked into the pockets of his dress pants. A man who looked like he carried the world on his shoulders—and intended to keep it that way.

Eloise walked in without hesitation.

"Good morning, Mr. Montgomery."

He turned his head slowly, green eyes meeting hers. His expression was cold and calculating, but there was a spark there. There was something restrained, but ready to ignite.

"You're late," he said.

"I arrived at 7:45," she answered firmly.

August turned fully toward her, his gaze drifting slowly over her as he examined every detail.

"Fine. Your desk is right outside my office, for one simple reason: so I don't have to go searching for you around the company. You'll receive direct instructions. Avoid mistakes, Miss Beaumont. They tend to be expensive."

"Mistakes only exist when there's room for failure." She raised an eyebrow. "That won't happen with me. I'll be your shadow to make sure everything runs perfectly."

He didn't respond. He simply gestured toward the desk outside his office. The computer was already on. A neat stack of folders waited for her.

For hours, the room sank into professional silence, broken only by the sound of typing, phone calls, and the occasional direct order from him.

At exactly ten o'clock, she stood up.

"I'll get your coffee."

He simply nodded.

When she returned, she placed the cup on his desk with precise care. August picked it up, took a sip… and paused.

"It's… acceptable."

"Acceptable?" She let out a soft laugh. "That's practically a compliment coming from you."

He set the cup down and leaned forward, his eyes locking onto hers.

"Miss Beaumont… you still don't understand. Around here, you don't win with boldness. You win with perfection."

"And boldness isn't a kind of perfection?"

He stood and walked around the desk until he was close to her.

"You think you're clever."

"I am clever."

The air between them grew heavy. An invisible tension formed every time their eyes met. Eloise felt it.

And so did he.

But before anything more could happen, Melissa appeared at the door.

"Mr. Montgomery, the board documents are here."

August stepped back, his distant posture instantly returning.

"You can leave them on my desk."

Eloise sat down again, steadying her breathing. The game had begun.

But she wasn't just a piece on the board.

She knew exactly what she was doing.

Later that morning, when she went to the restroom, she looked at herself in the mirror and whispered softly, "This is going to hurt. But I'll handle it."

What she didn't know yet was that this man with all his trauma, shadows, and rules, would be far more than just a difficult boss.

He would become the greatest risk of her life.

And maybe… the most dangerous one.
