Serenity observed Carrie. She had changed drastically and was now able to scheme and keep her secrets well hidden.

“Mrs. York, I heard you’d given birth, so I came to visit. No wonder I haven’t seen you dropping Sonny off at preschool lately,” Carrie said, placing the supplements she had brought on the bedside table.

“I bought you some supplements. Childbirth takes a toll on the body. You should take good care of yourself.”

Her own child had not been allowed to live. If it had, she would be feeling its kicks by now, and it would have been born later this year.

Thinking of that ill-fated child, Carrie’s gaze drifted toward the baby in Carrie’s arms.
