Kate was sleeping, hugging the pillow, inhaling its scent, and slowly opening her eyes. On the pillow was Bastien’s hoodie; although it smelled like him, it wasn’t the same as having Bastien by her side. She sat up and brought it to her nose, then stood up following the smell of food. Her baby was moving like a little fish in her belly. She reached the kitchen, and there was Bastien, shirtless, with his beautiful bare torso, his back tattoos perfectly covering those muscles that showed. Kate bit her lip; she had to be strong, she couldn’t fall so easily. They had talked; he had told her he still loved her. It wasn’t like she didn’t know it—everyone knows that such a big love doesn’t disappear overnight.
Bastien was moving around the kitchen, fully focused. He felt Kate’s gaze and turned around. Kate was looking at him holding her hoodie.
“Kate…” Bastien walked toward her. “Come, sit down. I would bring you dinner in bed; why don’t you rest? I don’t want you standing, the doctor…”
“The
