A short time earlier…

Elizabeth was finishing getting ready to go to church when she heard the unmistakable sound of a car engine coming up the driveway.

She ran to the window and recognized him immediately: it was John. Her heart raced.

It was early. She wasn’t expecting him at that hour. Still confused, she dismissed James and ran to wait for him at the door.

But the reunion wasn’t what she’d imagined. Even after being away for so many days, John returned colder and more distant.
