Taken aback, Doc was frozen for a moment before he gently stroked Laurence’s head and asked tenderly, “Why do you ask that?”

“I’ve never seen my birth parents. I don’t even know what they looked like. If they were alive, why wouldn’t they come look for me? How could I have been left on the roadside for Mommy Jane to pick up?”

The little boy was sharp. He could piece things together.

“Sonny’s parents are divorced, but he still sees his dad often. He lives with his mom, and even when she works far away, she comes back to see him.

“But I don’t have that. I was thinking, if they’re not looking for me or coming to see me, maybe they’ve become stars in the sky, watching over me.”

Doc hugged him tighter and sighed. “Laurence, you have us. Your Mommy Jane and Uncle Ben treat you as their own and all of the Johnsons truly think of you as family.

“Your birth parents might not be around anymore, but so many of us love and care for you. You have to grow up happily and without worries.”
