Turning her head, Liberty looked at her husband and complained, “Why did you wake me up? That dream was so wonderful. I wanted to keep dreaming, to see my baby grow up, get married, and succeed me.”

Duncan was speechless for a moment before he replied, “What kind of dream was so good you didn’t want to wake up? Who was growing up? Sonny? Are you planning for him to take over?”

Would the Fishers’ family rules even allow that? It was unlikely. The Fishers had been matriarchal for centuries.

“Before falling asleep, we were talking about whether I might get pregnant. Then I dreamed that I did and had a baby girl who looked just like you, not like me at all.
